Mermaid Whalena

California

Whalena is located near Ojai, California and serves the Santa Barbara and surrounding regions for mermaid parties.

Long ago, in the far-off waters of the Atlantic, lived a beautiful young woman who loved the ocean. She lived on a rocky island, delighting in a seaside life of gleaming tidepools, salty sand dunes, and soft sea grasses, where she would collect sea glass in shades of sapphire blue, emerald green, and cloudy white.

Her mother, a painter who loved to read and dream, taught her the names of all the shells. They would spend hours walking the beach, searching for the most unusual ones. They would sit in the sand and draw their favorites. They both loved to sing and learned the songs of all the seabirds.

Her father was a ship captain who was away at sea more than ever on land. When he would return to land, he told stories of battles with massive sea monsters, cursing the waters and their dark secrets. At night, if she listened carefully, the young woman could hear the monsters’ haunting wails echo far across the ocean. But the young woman was not afraid. She wanted to see the monsters for herself!

One night the monsters’ calls boomed over the water and spiraled like galaxies, making the moonbeams dance. Enchanted, she raced silently down to shore, where she waited, listening. As the strange songs swirled around her, she felt the ocean pull at her heart. Her inner voice became one with the sea. She walked into the churning waves. A wave swelled up, cradled her gently, and carried her into the wide open water. She loved the cool night air, the stars dazzling overhead, and the moon lighting her way.

She wondered if monsters sang to each other like seabirds. With a deep breath, she let her voice rise with the tide. She sang from a deeper place than she had ever known, deeper than the birdsongs, deeper than the human songs she knew. The strange tones lit within her a golden warmth unlike she’d ever felt on land. Her inner fire glowed softly brighter with every note, keeping her body safe and warm even in the cold night waters.

She gazed up at the stars and paused, breathing in the salty air, filled with joy. Suddenly, a magnificent voice echoed across the water, rumbling low and rising to twinkling heights. It felt like the music of the stars and the music of the deepest waters were swirling in a melody as ancient as the sea itself. Her eyes widened as she turned her head, sensing the direction of this beautiful voice. Suddenly, she heard a massive blast and a tremendous plume shot up to the stars, a shining column of swirling pearly white water. It reached to the sky, taller than a house. As water droplets rained around her, she saw a giant tail rise from the water, larger than a ship.

A monster! It turned its massive form gracefully around her, and as the waves swirled, they began to dance. It pushed the water towards her and she caught the current, swam hard and rose up the wave in a joyous breach, sending ocean spray shining in the moonlight. Laughing, the young woman sang to her new friend, “Thank you!” They danced and sang in the water until the stars began to fade, and the purple sky grew dusky gray.

“My father calls you monsters, but what are you really called?” she asked the creature. “Whale,” the creature sang. She felt the song brighten the sky with a long arc of graceful tone. Moving its massive tail, the whale sent a wake of water to guide her back to shore. She sang “Whale, I will see you soon.” into the dawn.

The next night, she returned to shore. She listened to the sea, and it spoke within her, “Now.” A wave swept up and lifted her into the wide depths. “Whale, may I come with you?” she sang. Her friend appeared, singing like a shining star. “Yes, little sister,” it sang. Their voices joined in harmony, rising until the stars shook. The moon sent a beam of silver light through the crown of her head, blazing through to her toes. She felt her body transform. Where she once had legs, she felt a powerful column of strength, and a wide fin, dancing in the water. A tail of her own!

The whale turned toward the horizon and dove deep. “Whalena,” it sang, “Welcome.” She felt ancient and newborn, as if she were returning home. Her eyes shone underwater as she swam swiftly alongside her friend. She could see and breathe as if for the first time.

And so began Whalena’s life with whales. A life of moonlit swims, learning their ways, growing to love their family as her own. The whales taught her the wisdom of peace. Unwavering and infinite, the whales showed her how to hold peace in all actions, thoughts, and songs. They helped her shape her heart into a powerful source of peaceful love, resilient and pure. Every day, she would return to land with the dawn, to sing the wisdom of peace she learned. As she swam to shore, her human form restored, she sang across the sea, “I will share what you have taught me with my human family. In time, they will understand. In time, we will love you as our own family, as I love you today. In time, we will love each other, as you love us. In time, love will shine over the land as the Sun, it will shine over the sea as the Moon, and there will be peace.”
