Our Founding
Sheroes Entertainment LLC was founded by a female knight and stunt woman in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. After working for several years in film and in Renaissance Fairs and festivals across the country she became disenchanted with abuse that she saw repeatedly occurring in the live action industry, concerned with unsafe working conditions, and infuriated by countless horror stories from women on sets about inappropriate sexual expectations from male directors. Instead of accepting the status quo she decided to do something about it - by giving the market a new option in Sheroes Entertainment LLC.
From our lady knight's belief that talent should be championed and that great families and great performers should be connected Sheroes Entertainment LLC was founded.
Our History
Being #1 is something we do. Not just because we love to think creatively and of what the world “could be,” but also because often it’s the right thing to do.
We became internationally famous in 2012 as the unequivocal private sector aquatic entertainment industry leaders with our film-quality real swimming mermaids, mesmerizing underwater photography, underwater film production services, and "fintastic" Los Angeles Mermaid School.
Safety has been important to us since the very first day. Shortly after our founding we because the first company in the USA to offer a community class or learning structure for contemporary mermaid training and safety in 2012 with the first integration of lifeguards and mermaids at pool parties starting in 2013.
In 2013 we showcased the very first African American woman mermaid, started the career of the USA consumer market’s very first openly gay, male, mixed race merman, and welcomed our first performer of Middle Eastern descent.
2014 was all about safety and rejecting the lack of it in the party company and mermaid industries. At that point we made lifeguards an even more integral part of our team and became the first mermaid company to require that all mermaids working with children had a current, valid, lifeguard certification. With the hiring of two talented lifeguards our connection to the Jewish community in Los Angeles and their work towards tolerance, a new focus on humanitarian pursuits was created. With the help of one of the lifeguards, our first training focused on deaf and hearing impaired community members (and how to use ASL) was held. This would later inspire our acclaimed “Aqua ASL” aquarium show program that showcases ASL in a positive, fun, and exciting light.
2014 opened a new level of fantasy collaboration as we created the first character for the mermaid and siren realm of the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball in Los Angeles, the largest costume ball in the United States.
In 2015 we broadened the concept of what a character performer could be by scouting for, training, and fully launching the career of the first Chinese American mermaid in the United States.
In 2016 we challenged size and the definition of beauty by collaborating with Buzzfeed on Plus Size Women Try Underwater Modeling; a revolutionary video narrative where our safety and photo team showcased the abilities of plus size talent in swimming and underwater artistry.
2016-2020 saw an expansion of services with an increasing global perspective on entertainment from performers and staff from every continent in the world (excluding Antarctica… maybe someday).
In 2016 the first “Finterns” were trained for event industry careers. The Fintership program marked a unique point in USA vocational training history with six months of free career and skills level training given to applicants to increase diversity and depth of skills in the industry, regardless of if a person could afford such training. In total 7 Finterns had their careers launched through this program with a total educational donation and sponsorship commitment from our company of over $100,000.
In 2019 we rocked the mermaid social media world by showcasing a biracial pair of LBGTQIA+ mermaids (both past and alumni) celebrating Valentine’s Day underwater with an impromptu kiss. Body size inclusion also soared to new levels in the costuming / wardrobe department with paid performers ranging from size XXS up to XXXXL working across our various service and character lines.
In 2020 our company staff metrics reached 50%+ People Of Color with its ongoing “One Ocean” skills-based employment screening process that puts Pass / Fail skills-based metrics first before any other factors during hiring considerations. In 2020 a woman magician was added to our roster, a relatively unusual talent in a primarily male industry. 2020 marked the year of also welcoming our first transgender guest performer to the digital stage.
In 2020 and 2021 we amplified our reach by turning to virtual entertainment and educational programming to help school age children who were separated from their friends due to the COVID pandemic.
In 2020 our lead mermaid also became the first PADI Mermaid Instructor Trainer in the Continental USA, helping to train the USA’s own mermaid trainers.
2021 saw two Sheroes alumni who had been trained as lifeguards through our company save lives in their communities - Mermaid Laguna successfully responded to a heart attack and stroke, and Mermaid Merici saved the life of a man who also suffered a heart attack.
In 2021-2022 three of our long-time team members welcomed new joy in to their families, and we were there every step of the way. Collaborating with them to offer new maternity and post-natal friendly roles that offered them even more flexibility, rethought custom costuming, and career evolution options so that they could continue to entertain while also caring for their own families.
In 2022 and 2023 our aquarium shows took audiences to new depths of ocean education understanding, seamlessly blending magic, swimming, sustainable use consumption, and ocean animal facts in an adaptable, 20-30 minute full stage show.
In 2023 Mermaid Naiya was notified of her approval to receive the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit Lifesaving Award - a national level award signed by the President of the USA for her bravery and skills demonstrated by saving a man from a near-fatal beach drowning.
As the next few years arrive we can’t wait to see what else we accomplish. We hope you’ll be there with us as we build a brighter tomorrow where clients and talented performers from all backgrounds are welcome.
