About Ocean Institute
Ocean Institute is an educational facility specializing in innovative marine and social science programs. The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs. More than 115,000 K-12 students and 6,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute's 61 award-winning, immersion style programs.
To learn oceanography and science, students voyage onto the ocean to feel and taste the salty sea spray, sort through live specimens, sea creatures, and deep sea fish, observe migrating whales and collect scientific data.
To learn maritime history and literature, students spend an entire night aboard the brig Pilgrim - each student hauling lines, hoisting sails, standing night watch and swabbing decks. This year, the Ocean Institute celebrates its 30th year as host of the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest annual gathering of tallships on the West Coast.

What is a Tallship?
A tallship is a large traditionally rigged sailing vessel. Popular modern tall ship rigs include topsail schooners, brigantines, brigs, and barques.
The Ocean Institute maintains two tall ships, the brig, Pilgrim, and the Spirit of Dana Point, an accurate replica of a 1770's privateer used during the American Revolution.
